Summer 2018 Update: New Readers, New Workshops, New Sneak Peeks
Voces Sin Fronteras Gains New Readers
This summer, Voces Sin Fronteras writers have been busy sharing their book with new readers.
In July, writers visited a bilingual summer writing workshop for middle-schoolers called Nuestra Voz through PEN/Faulkner’s Writers in Schools Program. (See photo at left).
Last month, we donated 25 copies of Voces to clients of Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), a nonprofit currently serving kids and teens separated from their parents on the U.S.-Mexico border. These new readers are extremely important to the authors, who wanted their stories to reach a broad audience, but also wanted to let young people like themselves know that they are not alone.
This weekend, Voces writers will represent the book at the annual Small Press Expo in Bethesda. Authors will participate in a comics-making workshop and panel. Come out and meet the authors!
NWMI Writers Complete First Round of Workshops
The first round of workshops with Next Wave Muslim Initiative (NWMI) writers are complete!
The young Muslim-American writers are producing a collection of creative responses about being young and Muslim in today's America. The book, inspired by their observations and experiences, will confront anti-Muslim discrimination and explore multiple perspectives of American Muslims. Revision workshops begin this month and will be completed this fall. We can’t wait to share this book with you.
Reach Inc. Books Come to Life
For the sixth year in a row, we held 4-week long children’s book writing workshops with the teen tutors of Reach Incorporated. The text for the newest additions to the Books by Teens series are complete and are being brought to life by young, up-and-coming illustrators. Check out some of the artwork-in-progress below:
