How to Make Ayah’s Liquid Gold Sandwich

How to Make Ayah’s Liquid Gold Sandwich
by Ayah

Ingredients:

-2 slices of bread per sandwich, preferably a kind of bread that holds well, but isn’t too thick or thin (brioche depends). Honestly, just use any bread you want. I don’t have the time, nor the crayons, to explain bread science.

-Any sort of cheese that’s yellow/orange, you can use the regular ones in the plastic wrappies, but I like to feel special and use fancy organic valley cheese. Of course, you do have freedom of cheese.

-Butter (maybe one with a picture of Paula Deen on it, but we don’t discriminate against vegan butter)

-Oil (you can use all of oil)

-Eggs. You’ll need one per sandwich, but please don’t be an eggist.

-A camera. To really do it the authentic way, don’t use an actual camera, just pretend there is one and you are filming a youtube video

-Assess your level of laziness and willingness to do anything beyond the minimum level of work required. If you have the strength of a raging fire and force of a great typhoon, here are some other toppings I'd suggest:

  • Caramelized Onions

  • Mustard (just a smidge, this stuff can be overpowering)

  • Hot sauce (okay maybe this is more of a necessity but it’s here for all y’all who can’t do heat)

  • Potatoes (slice em thin and put it with your cheese, you can choose to fry them for a little more crunch)

  • Garlic (*insert heart eyes*)

  • Jalapenos/some sort of spicy relish-y topping

The procedure:

Pull out a pan, put it on the stove and allow it to heat up on medium heat.

Gather thine bread and butter it. I just do one side per slice, but the amount of butter you spread will be a buzzfeed quiz result of how healthy you are.

By now, your pan should be warm but just to make sure, hover your hand over and use your third eye to figure out its level of warmth.

Put your bread butter side down for just a smidge until it gets to the first level of toastiness you’d find on your toaster.

Add your cheese (remove the wrapper if it has one on), you can use as much cheese as you’d like, but I usually go with two organic slices. This is also where you can add any other toppings if you’re using them (except for the condiments).

Once you have finished boasting about your cheese privilege, put your other bread slice on top and begin the grilled cheesing process. Now, you’re probably wondering, why don’t you just use a sandwich press or something? Well, you little dried out marker, you’ll thank me when you have only one pan to clean and this ain’t laziness, it’s water conservation.

You can imitate a press by stacking things on top of your sandwich, just make sure you have something between your sandwich and the heavy items like a paper plate barrier. I often use a water filled teapot but you can use whatever is at your disposal; a pot, a rock, a fridge, etc.

While you wait for your grill to be cheesed, you can do various other activities like contemplating, push uping, or dancing, but if you want to make it authentic, act out scenes from movies or from stories you would like to write.

Flip and return to the previous step. When you flip it depends on your heat level, and whenever your third eye tingles.

Remove your grilled cheese once you got a nice golden color on both sides (you may use the barrier plate) and now go grab your oil and pour some on the pan. If you’re wondering about the measurements, as the great chef Mama always says, “My eyes are measurements”.

Go get your egg and some sort of flipping tool while you're at it. Crack your egg and cook it. I won’t give you my egg making secrets but whatever you do, make sure your yolk stays yolky!!

When your egg has been cooked, open up your sandwich carefully, put the egg in the middle,

(and any condiments if using), close your sandwich gently (don’t press too hard on it) and go take a seat.

Enjoy the sandwich (If you’re muslim, don’t forget to say bismillah) until you get to the middle. Once you bite into it, sit back and enjoy your yolk running through and glimmering alongside your processed cheese...like liquid gold.
