by Abreona, Kairon, and Cassandra of Reach Incorporated
Every year on the first day of school, Carla’s friends show up wearing the coolest new shoes. But not Carla -- her mom always buys her the Same Lame Boring Plain sneakers. And this year is no different. This time, though, Carla won’t settle for more of the same. With a little advice from her older cousin Josh, a few experiments, and a whole lot of creativity, Carla decides to take a chance and do her own thing. Meet the Authors
As reading tutors to elementary-aged students, the teens of Reach noticed that few children's books reflected their lived experience as youth of color. So they decided to take action and write their own. Now these D.C. teens are diversifying children's literature, one smart-fun-real-brave-bold story at a time.
Cassandra was a student at Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington, DC when she authored her book. She has been working with Reach Incorporated since September 2016. She enjoys cooking and working with others. In college, she will major in culinary studies and business. In the future, she will own a restaurant. She was a junior when she wrote Carla and the Jazzed-Up Scorch-Torch Funtastic Sneakers, her first book. She wanted to write a children's book so she can inspire other young people.
