Meet the Authors
As reading tutors to elementary-aged students, the teens of Reach noticed that few children's books reflected their lived experience as youth of color. So they decided to take action and write their own. Now these D.C. teens are diversifying children's literature, one smart-fun-real-brave-bold story at a time.
Dartavius is a student at Dunbar High School. His dream is to become an actor. Critics have called him a beautifully talented illustrator. He was a sophomore when he wrote his first children's book, Drip Drip: The Story of the Angry Sherbet, which he has read too many times. He is also the author of Madison, Sit Down!
Brittany was a tenth grader at Eastern Senior High School when she wrote Tiffany and The Two Missing Teeth. She likes to take care of kids. She sings in her school choir and dances. This is her first children’s book. She hopes readers learn from this book not to be shy, and that they can be themselves even on their worst days. They can always make the better of it. She wanted to write a children’s book because she wanted to see how it felt to write for kids and to change how they view things.
