Not So Free As Can Be

Not So Free As Can Be
by Marlow

If someone were to ask me how I would define the term freedom, I would reply by saying that it is not being burdened by any hindrances that prevent growth mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually. When I was first asked to write this prompt, I was stumped because  I assumed that people already knew what freedom was, but over time, the term needs to be revised. The first thought that came to mind was slavery in America, it was the easiest connection I could make towards defining the word. For when one is subjected to degrading tasks, vicious words spat at them, and policy after policy of making sure that the existence of said people who are slaves live without hope for the future, it not only becomes a severe lack of freedom, but more so the subjugation of an entire race. The feeling of being free at times does not feel like a reality. Personally, I do not believe we are free at all.

I do not fully believe that we are free because though we have come a long way as human beings, there are still countless beliefs, values, traditions, and other forms of expression that are shunned and seen as archaic in nature. Not every person on this planet is supposed to walk the same path as the other. If that were the case, the world would be as bland as sawdust. Nothing could be truly learned or taught where there is a lack of opposition to challenge the strength of someone in life. I know it may feel as though I am going in circles, but just hang in there for a moment if you can. What I am really trying to say is that no one is free unless everyone is free. There are many ways to hinder one's freedom and prevent them from expressing their beliefs.

If I were to see freedom as how I interpret it, I would see a time where people can engage in a conversation of religion and both give their sides of the argument. The conversation should end without either party raising their voice and getting bent out of shape over someone not having the same sentiments. Another form of freedom would be a lesbian or gay couple being able to convey their affection for one another in public without bystanders having something rude or disrespectful to say about them. Everyone has the right to be happy, and if said person decides to be in a same sex relationship, why should we prevent people from having someone in their life that they care about, even if this person is the same gender. If someone were to ask me if I felt free, I would have to say no because every thought or belief that I have is challenged. I enjoy a challenge but when it turns into dismissing who this person is, then what was the point of me even speaking in the first place.

In order for me to feel free as can be I need to be able to do two things, and just two things. Those two items are to stay Black, and finally die as we all must; but preferably of old age and not as a victim of hate.
