Kathy Crutcher

Kathy has been mentoring young writers since 2003 and is committed to using the power of story to foster a more just and inclusive next generation. Since founding Shout Mouse in 2014, Kathy has helped provide platforms for over 500 new youth authors and overseen the publication of 50+ books. For her dedication to promoting diversity, inclusion, and narrative change, she was awarded the Changemaker Award in Social Justice by Duke University in 2021.

Prior to this work, Kathy was the DC Director for Writopia Lab as well as the regional affiliate for the Scholastic Writing Awards, through which her students won national recognition every year. Her own writing has earned recognition from places like the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities as well as fellowships to writing programs in Kenya and Prague. Kathy received her BA from Duke University and her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona. She has also completed the Nonprofit Management Certificate Program at Georgetown University. Kathy is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio and enjoys hiking, reading, traveling, and dreaming big dreams for Shout Mouse and its authors!

Alexa Patrick

Alexa Patrick is a poet and performer from Connecticut. She is a graduate of American University, where she studied Psychology, African-American and African Diaspora Studies, and Spanish. Alexa is a Cave Canem Fellow and is the 2019 Head Coach for the DC Youth Slam Team. She holds teaching positions through Split This Rock and The University of the District of Columbia. Alexa also coaches the slam teams of American University and George Washington University for the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational. Malik Thompson

Malik Thompson (he/they) is a Black queer person from Washington, DC. Having worked in independent bookstores for many years, he is also the former Co-Chair of OutWrite DC and has taught workshops for the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Hurston/Wright Foundation, and other organizations. His work has been published in the Cincinnati Review, Denver Quarterly, Hayden's Ferry Review, and elsewhere. He has received fellowships and residencies from organizations including Cave Canem, Lambda Literary, the Anderson Center, and Monson Arts.

Dave Ring is a speculative fiction writer born near Boston, educated in Dublin, and living in DC for more than ten years now. As an editor, his work has been nominated for the Lambda, Locus and Ignyte Awards. His former projects include stints supporting folks affected by sexual violence and substance use, serving as chair of the OutWrite LGBTQ Literary Festival from 2015-2020, and an awful lot of exporting things as pdfs. He's contentiously somewhat lukewarm on the Oxford comma and the appropriate number of spaces after a period.

Barrett Smith is a writer, educator, trapeze artist and faery. She is a Duke Ellington School of Arts alum and a graduate of the University of Texas, where she was Dedman Scholar and studied racial inequity in special education. In addition to teaching, Barrett has studied Flying and Static Trapeze at Circus Warehouse and trained as a Full Spectrum Doula with Birthing Advocacy Doula Training. They write short stories and creative nonfiction and create literary zines. Ze is the creator and editor of The Morning After Zine, a self-care zine for survivors of sexual assault, and the Pandemic Mini-Planner, a fundraiser for young people affected by COVID-19. Barrett spends her spare time bullet journaling, supporting local queer youth, and spoiling her two black cats.

Sasa Aakil

Sasa Aakil is a Multimedia Artist, Writer, and the 2021 Montgomery County Youth Poet Laureate. She is a potter, painter, poet, print maker, and bassist living and working in Wheaton, Maryland. Sasa has been featured in the Bethesda Magazine for her work as Youth Poet Laureate. She has
also been featured in the Washington Post, as well as on WTOP for her work on the A Man Was Lynched Yesterday Project in 2020. She has won numerous awards in writing and performed poetry at the Kennedy What’s Going On Festival in 2023. Sasa is the founder of If All the Trees Were Pens Open Mic and recently published her first chapbook, the culmination of all my despair and the music that saves me. Hayes Davis

Head Story Coach

Hayes Davis holds a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Maryland. He is a former Bread Loaf working scholar as well as a founding member of Cave Canem, a writer's center with a focus on African American poets and writers. His work has appeared in New England Review, Poet Lore, Gargoyle, Beltway Poetry Quarterly and several anthologies. Hayes teaches English at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC, where he also serves as the Upper School Coordinator for Equity, Justice & Community. He is excited to work with Shout Mouse to promote diverse voices within children’s literature!

Sarai Johnson is a 2014 graduate of Howard University, where she earned a BA in Print/Online Journalism and minored in English. She also holds an MA in Literature from American University and teaches College Writing there. Sarai has worked for several newspapers and magazines including The Indianapolis Star, DC Modern Luxury, and the Alexandria Gazette. Teri Ellen Cross Davis

Story Coach

Teri Ellen Cross Davis is the author of a more perfect Union (Mad Creek Books, 2021) winner of the 2019 Journal/Charles B. Wheeler Poetry Prize and Haint (Gival Press, 2016) winner of the 2017 Ohioana Book Award for Poetry. In 2022, she was one of two recipients of a state-wide Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award and in 2020 she received the Poetry Society of America's 2020 Robert H. Winner Memorial Award. She has been the recipient of grants from the Sustainable Arts Foundation and The Freya Project. A member of the Black Ladies Brunch Collective, she has been awarded fellowships and scholarships to Cave Canem, Hedgebrook, the Community of Writers Poetry Workshop and others. Her work has appeared in many journals and anthologies including: Academy of American Poets, Deep Beauty, Harvard Review, PANK, Poetry Ireland Review, and Kenyon Review. She was the 2019-2020 HoCoPoLitSo Writer-in-Residence for Howard County, Maryland, and is the current O.B. Hardison Poetry Series Curator and Poetry Programs manager for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C.

Marisa Senya Lengor

Story Coach

Marisa Senya Lengor is a writer, teacher and facilitator who is passionate about cultivating and promoting diverse young voices in literature. As an educator, Marisa has developed curricula to strengthen the language arts skills of students from all walks of life. She has also facilitated writing workshops for non-profit organizations as well as for senior military personnel within the U.S. Department of Defense. Marisa has worked with Shout Mouse Press since 2016, and served as a story coach on books like Deena Misses Her Mom and Georgia in The Jungle - A Story of Grief and Healing. Marisa holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Writing and Rhetoric from Pepperdine University and a Masters of Public Policy from George Mason University. Tatiana Figueroa Ramirez

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the mainland United States, Tatiana Figueroa Ramirez graduated with a B.A. in English Literature from UMBC and is a VONA Voices alumna, having worked with Willie Perdomo and Danez Smith. Tatiana currently performs, facilitates workshops, and hosts events in the DC area, having previously done so across the United States and the Dominican Republic at venues including New York University and The Kennedy Center. Drew Anderson

A science teacher turned teaching artist, poet turned parodist, and marathon runner turned motivational speaker, Drew Anderson is founder and co-host of Spit Dat (the longest-running open mic in DC) and co-creator of the critically-acclaimed stage production From Gumbo to Mumbo (nominated for the 2020 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Production - Theatre for Young Audiences, winner of "Best Of" for 2019 Charm City Fringe Festival). Recipient of the prestigious DC Arts and Humanities Fellowship, Drew has recently merged his decade-plus of artistic acumen and educational expertise to develop Spoof School and C.R.U.N.K. Academy, two dynamic arts education integration programs which teach students of all ages how to make learning fun by "making fun" of their learning. Equal parts teaching artist and performing artist, Drew is on a mission to share his love of drama, comedy, poetry, parody, and hip hop with all who are within his reach.

Bomani D. Armah

Bomani Armah (aka D’mite, aka Baba Bomani) is a Hip-Hop artist. Raised in Prince George’s County Maryland, Bomani is a fixture in the Maryland Art-Education, Hip-Hop and poetry scene. He first found national acclaim on Billboard’s College Radio charts with his appearance on the 2005 single and video for Mello & the Rados “Cool Witchu”. Bomani is best known his viral 2007 crunk-rap single and video, “Read a Book”. Currently a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist and formerly the Director of Poetry Events for Busboys and Poets, Bomani has performed at varied venues. From hosting the MLK observances at the Washington National Cathedral, to performing edu-taining Hip-Hop concerts at the Fillmore in Silver Spring. In 2019 he released his critically acclaimed Art Integrated Hip-Hop Album “Baba Got BARS”. Bomani is currently touring the country doing concerts, school assemblies, residencies and professional development with thousands of teachers and students each year. Holly Bass

Story Coach

Writer and performance artist Holly Bass has been published in Callaloo, nocturnes (re)view, Beltway, Roll Call and The Ringing Ear. Her performances have been presented at the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Museums, the Seattle Art Museum and the South African State Theatre. A Cave Canem poetry fellow who has received numerous grants from the DC Arts Commission, Bass was one of twenty artists to receive a Future Aesthetics grant from the Ford Foundation/Hip Hop Theater Festival. She is a founding member of DC WritersCorps and continues to work nationally and internationally as a teaching artist in schools, colleges and community centers. In 2011, she was named one of the “Top 30 Black Performance Poets” by The Root. Since 2014, she has directed a year-round creative writing and performance program for adjudicated youth in DC’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.

Zeynep Cakmak

Zeynep Cakmak recently graduated with a Masters Degree in Literature from American University in Washington D.C. She is the Program Assistant for the American University's Humanities Lab and will be an adjunct instructor in the Writing Studies Program at AU next year. Her favorite books are Exit West by Mohsin Hamid and We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She is currently working on a Sufi poetry translation project. Sheila McMullen

Sheila McMullin is author of daughterrarium, winner of the 2016 Cleveland State University Poetry Center First Book Prize chosen by Daniel Borzutzky. Faith Campbell

Faith Angel Campbell is a South Florida writer. Stacey Picard

Story Coach

Stacey Picard has been involved with the Theatre Lab Life Stories program at N Street Village in Washington, DC since 2013, and has directed that program since 2015. She has also directed similar stories programs for formerly incarcerated women in a transitional re-entry program andmiddle school children in the inner-city of Cleveland, Ohio, including a program specifically designed to empower young women. Inspired by this work, she launched The Urban Stories Project in 2017. She holds a Masters degree from John Carroll University and a Certificate in Non-Profit Management from Case Western Reserve University. She is a graduate of the Theatre Lab’s Life Stories Institute, and has apprenticed under Thom Workman and Elizabeth Pringle. She has a lifelong passion for theatre and for community work, especially with the poor and marginalized, and has served on numerous boards of organizations supporting those communities. She has taught in the immigrant community of Northern Virginia since moving to the area in 2012, and is super excited to join the Ballou Story Project Team at Shout Mouse Press this year.

Alison Klein

Story Coach

Alison Klein is a Lecturer in International Writing at Duke University, and she currently splits her time between the Duke campus in Durham and the campus in Kunshan, China. She earned her MFA in creative writing from the City College of New York, specializing in fiction, and her PhD in English literature from the CUNY Graduate Center. She has taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages, from elementary school to adults. Her academic writing includes the book, Anglophone Literature of Caribbean Indenture: The Seductive Hierarchies of Empire, an exploration of gender roles in the literature of Caribbean indenture, and her creative writing has been published in The Sun, The Columbia Review, Promethean, and Hot Metal Press.

Amber Colleran

Based out of Washington DC, Amber Colleran received her BA in fine arts at the University of Maryland, and her MA in publication design from the University of Baltimore. Amber has worked for 20 years in the DC area as an art director and graphic designer with book, marketing, corporate branding, and production experience. Gigi Mascareñas

Book Designer

Gigi Mascareñas is a queer second-generation Filipinx currently residing on the ancestral land of the Piscataway and Nacotchtank peoples (also known as Washington, DC). As a visual and performance-based storyteller, they love to connect with others through feeling; playing in mediums from painting and design to acting and stand-up comedy. Their art and stories are rooted in mental health, queerness, being born of immigrant parents, and deeper healing. They are currently creating-existing through the lens of love, playfulness, and (un)learning and (re)discovery. Robin Ha

Story Coach

Robin Ha (she/her) is a Korean American cartoonist based in Virginia. She is the author and the illustrator of Almost American Girl, a 2020 Harvey Award nominee and 2021 Walter Award honoree memoir, and Cook Korean!: A Comic Book With Recipes, a New York Times bestselling cookbook graphic novel. Her comics and illustrations have appeared in various publications including The Washington Post, and LA Times, as well as in anthologies highlighting Asian American culture including RISE: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now, New Frontiers: The Many Worlds of George Takei, and Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology (Secret Identities).


Robin grew up in Seoul, South Korea, and moved to the United States at age fourteen. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, she moved to New York City and worked in the fashion industry for several years before diving into comics. Robin is currently working on her third graphic novel inspired by the Korean folklore of Gumiho.

Sobia Ahmad

Art Coach

Sobia Ahmad is an interdisciplinary artist who is interested in the intersection of art and social impact. She mentored the youth in development of art for the book "I Am the Night Sky." Born and raised in Pakistan, Ahmad moved to the United States at the age of fourteen. After attending the University of Maryland, College Park and receiving a BA in Studio Art and a BS in Behavioral and Community Health, she worked with the Montgomery County government as a Behavioral Health Program Coordinator. There, she developed mental health educational materials and programming for minorities while practicing as an interdisciplinary artist. Currently, she balances her time as an artist and leads art and wellness workshops at various arts and community centers in the DC-area, sharing her passion for art as a tool for both personal and societal transformation. Ahmad's artwork investigates how social, cultural, and political forces shape personal narratives and community experiences. Her recent body of work grapples with nuances and complexities of the idea of home as an immigrant. Her work been reviewed in several major publications such as Al Jazeera English, The Washington Post, and The Huffington Post and has been included in multiple collections. She has exhibited internationally— including at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art in New York, and Queen Mary University in London. Recently, she was awarded an artist fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, is the 2019 recipient of the yearlong Next Generation/Sanctuary Artist Fellowship at VisArts in Rockville, Maryland, and is a 2019-2020 Halcyon Arts Lab Fellow in Washington DC. Jason Rodriguez

Comic Coach

Jason Rodriguez (he/him) edits comics, writes shorts, and bakes bread. He is also a mathematician. He used to blog a lot but he hasn’t really put a lot of himself into the world in a while. He has some things to say.

The anthologies that Jason edited/coedited are Voces Sin Fronteras (Shout Mouse Press), Colonial Comics volumes 1 and 2 (Fulcrum), Artists against Police Brutality (Rosarium), and Postcards: True Stories That Never Happened (Villard). Try Looking Ahead (Rosarium) is a collection of Jason’s middle-grade, sci-fi shorts and he has also written shorts for Once Upon A Time Machine (Dark Horse), District Comics (Fulcrum), and many other anthologies. He kickstarted a children’s book about particle physics called The Little Particle That Could. He dipped his toe into live storytelling and enjoyed it. His piece on identity won Best of 2018 from Story Collider.

Liz Laribee

Liz Laribee is a writer, illustrator, and organizer. She has taught creative writing, found-poetry and reuse methods of art-making to students of all ages. Liz was granted the Spectrum Arts Award, the YWCA Emerging Leader Award, and the title of Artist in Residency for the City of Harrisburg. She launched The MakeSpace Arts Collective, Sprocket Mural Arts, and DCBA Lawyers for the Arts in pursuit of arts advocacy. Her most recent comic project, “Amira in America,” serves as an illustrated story and reference guide on refugee resettlement.

Evan Keeling

Born and raised in Washington DC, Evan Keeling received a BFA in graphic design from the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Evan is an accomplished illustrator who has worked with a variety of clients. He is a founding member of the DC Conspiracy a collective of Washington, DC area comic book artists and writers. He has been published and self-publishes comic books for print and for the web. He recently colored the Eisner and Harvey nominated graphic novel “Captive of Friendly Cove” from Fulcrum and developing comic book based programing as well as creating mini-comics for the Smithsonian. Romeo Montero is an illustrator attending Moore College of Art & Design. Romeo loves creating vibrant and dynamic illustrations. Yurieli Otero

Illustrator

Yurieli Otero-Asmar is an illustrator from Dorado, Puerto Rico, with an MA in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She creates art for middle grade and young adult books, which combines her passion for books, reading, and art. In her illustrations, Yurieli enjoys designing characters and emphasizing the relationship and dynamic among them, as well as incorporating magical and fantastical elements. Additionally, Yurieli’s BA in Psychology greatly influences her perspective in her art, which is why she wishes to represent how people are formed by their rich life experiences and diverse stories. Alexis Williams

Illustrator

Alexis Williams is a digital illustration artist based in Philadelphia. She was born in Montgomery, Alabama and raised by her grandparents in West Philadelphia. Her passion for the arts stemmed from childhood as she dealt with bullying and depression during her younger years. As she grew older, she discovered the world of anime, comic books, and cartoons, and began creating her own comic books in her spare time. After graduating from high school, Alexis attended Moore College of Art and Design, where she grew her passion for illustration, creating her very first published children's book. With the support of her family, friends, and professors, Alexis graduated with a BFA in Illustration and was awarded the William David Brown Award for Most Improved In Illustration. She is currently pursuing her dreams as an artist, creating unique and diverse digital art while at work on her second children's book.

Rae Flores is an artist and writer based in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. She is a sophomore at the University of North Texas where she majors in Studio Art with a concentration in Drawing and Painting and minors in both English and Art History. She uses innovative illustration and fine art techniques alongside surrealist and fauvist concepts in order to create captivating visuals. Jordyn Flood is a student at Virginia Commonwealth University currently working as an illustrator and character designer. She loves designing awkward, funky characters and developing stories that make people laugh, cry, and simply relate. Shurjo Mukhi / Shreya is a multimedia artist from San Jose, CA based in Washington, DC. They hope to always create and reimagine with community--to use art as a way to manifest healthy loves and ways of being in real and dream worlds. They enjoy using colors, textures, and a mix of media in both finding and sharing their growing voice. They are committed to grounding their art practice in anti-racist, caste abolitionist, and LGBTQ+ liberation movements, as well as in material unlearning and reparations as a caste privileged individual. Ian L. Springer is an illustrator and digital artist based in Silver Spring, MD. Camryn is an illustrator pursuing a BFA in Communication Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. Tony White

Tony White was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised by a single mother. He is grateful for the opportunity to illustrate with Shout Mouse Press and plans to create work that makes people of all races, genders, ethnicities, and abilities feel included and represented. His dream is to work on a serialized publication or TV show. Rob Gibsun

Illustrator

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Rob Gibsun has been in love with the visual and performing arts since his youth. Graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Communication Arts department, Rob's art and poetry have been published in Yemassee Journal, The Offing, Kinfolks Quarterly, Minetta Review, Amendment. As a teaching artist, Gibsun has instructed watercolor painting classes with senior citizens at Pine Camp Art Center and facilitated creative writing and performance workshops with inner city youth through Richmond-area non-profit Art180. Gibsun has shared stages with Sonia Sanchez, Charlie Wilson, Saul Williams and Lianne La Havas. Founder of VCU's award-winning poetry organization, Good Clear Sound, Rob has extensive knowledge as a poetry slam coach. India Valle is an illustrator based out of Richmond, Va. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA in Communication Arts in 2018, and has a passion for fiction stories, character design, and children’s illustration. Jamilla Okubo

Illustrator

Jamilla Okubo is a 2016 graduate of Parsons School of Design, where she earned a BFA in Integrated Design, a self-driven interdisciplinary program where she integrated Fashion and Fine Arts. Jamilla is a mixed-media artist and combines collage, painting, and print design. Her work has a consistent theme of exploring the intricacy of belonging to an American, Kenyan, and Trinidadian identity. These identities help her explore the cross-cultural exchange in the African Diaspora and how fashion provides the African Diaspora methods of self-expression, identity, and self-authorship in attempts of reclamation. She has exhibited her work at Busboys & Poets (in Washington, DC), Studio 301 (in New York), Weeksville Heritage Center (in New York), Stanford University, and the Dray Walker Gallery (in London).
